A summer downpour can make a creek look fresh and full within minutes. But if fish begin gasping at the surface, drifting near the bank or washing up the next day, that rain may have carried a hidden hit to the waterway. Understanding why fish die after rain helps us protect the places where we fish, paddle, swim and spend our weekends.

Rain itself is not the villain. Healthy waterways need it. The problem is what the rain picks up as it moves across roofs, roads, car parks, footpaths and backyards, then sends straight into stormwater drains. In most suburbs, those drains lead to the nearest creek, river, lake, harbour or beach – not to a treatment plant.

Why fish die after rain: the shock beneath the surface

Fish need oxygen dissolved in water, just as we need oxygen in air. After rain, that oxygen can disappear fast. The chain of events is often called a fish kill, but it is rarely caused by one thing alone.

After a long dry spell, streets and gutters collect a concentrated mix of soil, leaves, grass clippings, pet waste, leaked oil, litter and other residue. The first heavy rain flushes this build-up into drains. That first rush can be especially dirty because weeks of material are moving at once.

Leaves, lawn clippings and other natural waste may seem harmless, but once they reach a creek they begin to break down. Tiny organisms consume oxygen as they do this work. If there is enough decaying material, oxygen levels can fall below what fish, crabs and other aquatic life can survive.

The result can be confronting. Fish often gather at the surface or near flowing water because they are searching for oxygen. Smaller fish may die first, but larger fish are not immune. A fish kill can also affect freshwater species, estuary fish, eels, prawns and the small creatures that sit at the base of the food web.

Dirty runoff is more than muddy water

Brown water after rain is not always dangerous on its own, but sediment can still cause harm. Fine soil clouds the water, blocks sunlight and can smother fish eggs or the plants and small animals fish rely on. It can also carry nutrients from fertiliser, animal waste and organic debris.

Extra nutrients can feed rapid growth of algae. When algae die and break down, more oxygen is used up. In a quiet pond, small urban lake or slow-moving creek, that oxygen squeeze can become severe.

Runoff may also contain substances fish cannot simply shrug off: detergents from washing cars on the driveway, paint and building wash-off, oil leaks, chemicals from gardens, and rubbish that breaks into smaller pieces. A single event may not cause an obvious fish kill. Repeated smaller doses, however, weaken a waterway and make the next big rain much harder for it to handle.

Sudden changes can stress fish too

Some fish live in estuaries, where fresh and salty water naturally mix. A large burst of fresh stormwater can quickly change the saltiness of the water near the surface. Fish adapted to a particular range can become stressed, particularly in enclosed bays, canals and creeks with limited flow.

Temperature matters as well. Warm water holds less oxygen than cool water. That is why a fish kill can be more likely after hot weather followed by heavy rain. The rain may wash oxygen-hungry material into water that was already warm, shallow and under pressure.

Sometimes heavy rain stirs up deeper, low-oxygen water in ponds and lagoons. Sometimes floodwater cuts fish off from their usual habitat. Nature can produce tough conditions on its own. But in built-up catchments, polluted runoff makes those conditions far worse. The status quo isn’t working when every dirty street becomes a direct pathway to the water we love.

What a fish kill can tell us about a catchment

A fish kill is not just a sad sight at the edge of a creek. It is a warning from the whole catchment – every driveway, park, road and yard upstream of that point.

This is where local knowledge matters. If a creek has been healthy for years and suddenly turns murky after every storm, residents are often the first to notice. Fishers spot changes in baitfish. Dog walkers notice a smell. Families see rubbish trapped along the bank. These observations are valuable because waterway health is lived experience, not just a reading on a chart.

It also depends on the location. A fast-running creek may recover quickly after rain because moving water mixes in oxygen. A shallow pond, a tidal backwater or a canal with little circulation may take longer. One dead fish does not always mean a major pollution event, while dozens or hundreds of fish in distress deserve prompt attention.

If you see a suspected fish kill, take a few clear photos from a safe distance and note the location, date, time, water colour and any unusual smell or visible pollution. Report it to your local council or the relevant environment authority. Keep children and pets away from affected water, and do not eat fish or shellfish from the area until official advice says it is safe. Avoid handling dead fish unless necessary.

The practical changes that stop pollution at the drain

The good news is that the strongest solutions start before rain reaches the gutter. Every household, club and local business can reduce the load heading downstream. This is not about being perfect. It is about stopping the obvious stuff from becoming somebody else’s problem at the creek mouth.

Four habits make a real difference:

  • Sweep up leaves, grass clippings and soil from driveways and paths before rain. Put green waste in the garden bin or compost, not in the gutter.
  • Wash cars on grass or at a car wash where dirty water is managed, rather than letting detergent and grime run down the driveway.
  • Use fertiliser, weed treatments and pest products sparingly, and never apply more when heavy rain is due.
  • Pick up pet waste, secure rubbish bin lids and keep paints, oils and cleaning chemicals out of drains.

Small choices add up because stormwater is shared water. The litter outside a sporting club, the clippings left on a footpath, or the soapy water running from a driveway may travel much further than it looks. If your favourite beach, river or fishing spot is downstream, it is already connected to your street.

Give rain somewhere cleaner to land

Backyards can do more than simply shed water. A patch of garden, mulch around plants, healthy lawn and leaf litter kept out of drains can slow runoff and filter some of the grime before it leaves the property. Native plants suited to local conditions can help hold soil in place while creating shade and habitat.

There are trade-offs. A garden should not be built in a way that directs water into a neighbour’s yard or creates a trip hazard. For renters, even simple actions such as using pots, keeping drains clear of leaves and reporting damaged stormwater grates can help. For apartment residents, a conversation with the strata committee or building manager about cleaning practices and bin areas can prevent a lot of rubbish from reaching the street.

Community spaces matter too. Sporting clubs, schools, cafés and community centres can set the standard by keeping wash-down water out of drains, providing bins where people need them and making stormwater messages visible. When local groups act together, the change is easier to see – cleaner drains, clearer creeks and fewer surprises after a storm.

The next time rain starts drumming on the roof, look towards the nearest gutter. That water is beginning a journey to a local waterway. Keeping it clean is one of the most direct ways we can give fish a better chance to keep swimming there.
